ABOUT US
Photobiomodulation for the Treatment of Dry Eye
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is an innovative method of treating dry eye, particularly effective for patients suffering from Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Using non-ionizing light sources such as LEDs and lasers, PBM stimulates cells to enhance meibum production, reducing inflammation and promoting tissue healing.
How does Photobiomodulation work?
PBM works by using low-energy LED lights that penetrate tissues to stimulate mitochondria, the cells' "energy powerhouses". This triggers a series of biological reactions that improve meibum production and reduce inflammation.
- Light sources used :
- Lasers
- Light-emitting diodes (LEDs)
- Visible and near-infrared light (400 - 1100 nm)
- Biological effects observed :
- Pain reduction
- Immunomodulation
- Promoting healing and tissue regeneration
Application in the Treatment of Dry Eye
PBM is particularly useful for stimulating the Meibomius glands, improving tear quality and relieving dry eye symptoms. Treatments include several 15-20 minute sessions, generally comfortable and non-invasive.
- Treatment methods :
- Several treatment sessions
- Use of LED lights to stimulate glandular function
- Photobiomodulation (LLLT) sessions to reduce inflammation
Advantages of Photobiomodulation
Photobiomodulation offers several advantages over traditional dry eye treatments:
- Non-invasive and safe: no pain or discomfort during treatment
- Effectiveness: Significant improvement in dry eye symptoms for the majority of patients
- Symptom reduction: Reduces redness, irritation and burning sensations
